What's Room 9 Up To?

Reading, Writing and Maths

Reading, Writing and Maths is the foundation of our teaching.  We use the assessment data to inform what we teach each student.  It's all about personalised learning.  In Room 9, we use a goal programme to celebrate progress and success of each student. You can see what this looks like on the page Our Goal Programme.

Independent Reading Project

Each term we do an independent reading project.  This term the project is a fiction focused one, working on chapter books and character analysis.  Students have a chapter book they are working on.  They get points for books they read and for tasks they complete.  It's a highly motivating and focused project.  Students are allowed two books from the library per week.  I encourage one of these to be a fiction text but the other can be non-fiction.  At the end of the term they will receive a grade.  Next term our independent reading project will have a non-fiction focus and will be linked with what we're doing in our inquiry.

Science and Inquiry

This year there is a huge focus on science.  We will be practising the skill of gathering and interpreting data.  We're pushing students to really observe, to think and to wonder.  This is where science integrates into inquiry learning. Our rich concept this term is "Relationships".  We will be exploring relationships in science by conducting investigations each week.  These investigations will involve concepts such as magnetism, gravity, forces, motion.  Along with this we'll be exploring the theme of relationships in social studies, in religious studies, in maths, in health, and in English.

PE: Swimming

In PE the focus this year is Swimming.  We will be following the SwimSafe programme.

Our Term's Value and Key Competency

This term our value is Cooperation.  We've done some thinking and talking about what cooperation means in our classroom.  We've also done the same with our Key Competency:  Managing Self.  Here's what these mean in our class:
